Your Ultimate Vegan Food Guide to Chiang Mai

As you may know, Chiang Mai is Thailand’s Vegan Food capital and in my opinion among the best places for plant based restaurants in Asia.

When looking up all the possible choices you could visit for a bite whilst in town, you can get a little overwhelmed at first (I know I did), it is (sadly) still a rarity to have such a variety of vegan friendly dining options, so to make it easier here’s a breakdown of Chiang Mai’s best vegan restaurants:

  1. Blue Diamond Breakfast Club

This is a true gem. Tucked away at the outer fringes of the Old City this cafe and restaurant not only offers plenty of delicious Thai meals (curries, stir frys, papaya salad…) but it also has a huge variety of vegan baked goods i.e. muffins, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls. Yes you read that right, vegan cinnamon rolls for $1 each (!!!!).

We loved Blue Diamond so much we came back almost every day. The setting of the place is cute too, lots of greenery, a tiny stream that runs through the outdoor area of the restaurant… I cannot recommend this place enough.

Address:  35/1 MoonMuang Road, Soi 9Chiang Mai, Thailand

Opening Hours:  Mon – Sat 7:00 am – 8:30 pm

 2.  Taste from Heaven & Vegan Heaven

If you watched any of the vlogs of people going to the former Thai Fruit Fest held by Freelee and Harley you most probably saw them eating at Taste from Heaven. This restaurant is a well established vegan and vegetarian eatery with a huge menu that additionally to the Thai favourites also offers Western dishes and sushi (although I wouldn’t recommend the sushi unless you’re REALLY craving it).

Their Som Tum (Green Papaya Salad) is heavenly, so is the Sweet and Sour (ask them to add the flat rice noodles into the stir fry instead of getting them as a side).

The owners of Taste from Heaven also opened a new restaurant thats entirely vegan called Vegan Heaven which has an even larger menu.

They also offer vegan/vegetarian cooking classes!

Address:  34/1 Ratmakka RoadChiang Mai 50200, Thailand

44/6 Loi Kroh Road, Chiang Mai, 50100, Thailand (Vegan Heaven)

Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00 – 22.00 (Taste from Heaven)

Mon-Sun 9:00 – 22:00 (Vegan Heaven)

3. May Kaidee

This small restaurant is another must visit. Their Pad Thai is the best I’ve ever tried and their curries taste amazing too! Like Taste from Heaven they offer half and full day cooking classes and best thing is they have another restaurant near Khao San Road in Bangkok (we ate there every day whilst in the city) so you’re never deprived of their heavenly dishes.

Address: 29/4 Chang Moi Kao Road, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Opening Hours: Mon-Sat 9:00-22:00

4. Ice Love You

As you guessed from the name of this place is an ice cream and dessert cafe with many vegan options. We came here once for an evening snack and left with a sugar high that had us crying of laughter. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you have a sweet tooth like me.

Address25/34 Srivichai Soi 1, Suthep RoadChiang Mai 50200, Thailand

Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 9:00-20:00

5. Maya Lifestyle Shopping Centre

This immense shopping centre is Chiang Mai’s answer to the glamorous, modern malls of our time. But we’re not concerned about all the shops the Maya has, or all the brands you can get here, we’re all about the food.

And this is where it gets interesting, the food court of the Maya Shopping Centre has one stall selling Chinese food of which 90 percent is vegan and many dishes are low in salt and oil. Downside is, the meals have been prepared in the morning and are not fresh. Upside is the price. You can get a huge portion consisting of different dishes and lots of rice for a dollar, which is crazy, if you think about it.

Another plus is the Mango Sticky Rice you can get from the vendor next “door”, so dessert is settled too.

Address: 55 Huay Kaew Rd Tambon Chang Phueak, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50300, Thailand

Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 11:00-22:00
